Slithering into Python Fundamentals

For many students in the room, this was the first time they had written a line of code. So I started where everyone feels at home: using Python as a calculator.
From there we moved to text, and to joining pieces of text together, a step called concatenation. Small wins like these build confidence fast, and they are the same building blocks every later data and cloud workshop relies on.
Teaching the basics reminded me how much I take for granted after years of coding. Explaining something simple, clearly, is harder than it looks, and it made me a better teacher for the sessions that followed.
